741 Gear Grinding - Archive

hi all , im wondering if anybody out there has an idea why the gears grind when i try to put my bike in gear ? its a 741 thats been layed up since 1976 . ive drained down primery flushed oil through and re filled with 30w ,but still no joy the clutch plates are new and clear free

0-40 synthetic oil part #AFE-QT.</P>
<P>Lubes the chain correctly, and low
vescosity to reduce clutch drag, compatable
with wet clutch use. I use it in the 2 Indians
and my EVO primaries for several years now.
Really helps this time of year with the bikes
sitting in a cold garage all night. </P>

With my Chief I decided to put in a King Clutch which is really pretty sweet. Though I must say just grooving your regular disks is almost as good.

My 741 which I've had since the 70's I pretty much just got used to getting the revs just right and letting it slide into gear without grinding with just a click. This can also be helped by using lighter weight oils. If you've got good seals some people use automatic transmission oil. Note: The plates are probably sticking a bit if it hasn't been on the road.
